Another week, another loss.
And so it goes for the 2007 New York Jets.
Gang Green's defense played reasonably well, but still managed to give up an 85-yard touchdown pass late in the game and the offense was as stagnant as a pool of standing water as the Bills sank the Jets 13-3 at the Meadowlands.
If you love watching sputtering offenses and punting -- this was the game for you. This gridiron battle wasn't pretty, but the Green and White still had a chance to bring it on home in the end. And once again they failed miserably. That's just the way things have been going in Jets Land this season. The biggest moment in the game came when Mangini made the switch to Kellen Clemens with 3:38 left in the fourth quarter and the Jets down 13-3. Clemens did nothing, but it could signal the changing of the guard for New York.
REASONS TO GET UP ON MONDAY:
David Harris. The second-round pick from Michigan started his first NFL game on Sunday and played very well. Harris took over the play-calling duties for the injured Jonathan Vilma and led the Jets with 17 tackles (10 solo) and picked up his first career sack. Harris looked extremely comfortable working in the 3-4 defense and helped the Jets hold Buffalo to 3.1 yards per rush in the game.
Darrelle Revis. The Green and White blitzed early and often in this one and Revis was a major contributor. The rookie didn't pick up any sacks, but he did pick up some pressures and disrupted the timing on pass patterns. Revis also recorded his first NFL interception to snuff out a Bills drive in the second quarter. The first-round pick from Pitt finished with 6 tackles.
REASONS TO SLEEP IN ON MONDAY:
Honestly, I could write about 12 different things here, but I'll try and keep it short -- for brevity's sake and for my own sanity.
2-on-1. The Jets were down 6-3 late in the fourth and had the Bills pinned at their own 3-yard line. A quick stop and the Gotham Green should have gotten the ball back with excellent field position. It didn't happen. Not only did the Jets allow Buffalo to pick up a first down, but the secondary helped set up the play of the game. On a first-and-10 from the Bills 15-yard line, J.P. Losman (who came in for the injured Trent Edwards) heaved a pass down the field for WR Lee Evans. Revis had tight coverage on the play and was in perfect position to net his second takeaway of the game. In addition, safety Abram Elam came over and tried to deliver a big hit. Nice idea -- terrible execution. Elam popped Revis instead of Evans and the Bills wideout somehow managed to come away with the football. The Bills wideout made the catch at the Jets 40-yard line and trotted the rest of the way for the easy score. I'll give it to the Jets -- they almost always find incredible ways to lose games.
Chad Pennington. Pennington looked good on the Jets first possession, but fell off and finished with these paltry numbers: 13 of 20 for 106 yards with no touchdowns and no picks. He also fumbled twice (but both were recovered by the Jets) and was sacked 3 times. Not a good performance from No. 10 and the quarterback will always take the heat when his offense fails to punch it into the end zone. Still, I may be the only fan left in the country -- nay, the world -- who thinks the Jets can win with Pennington. But with the Jets record now at 1-7, I don't think Pennington will get another opportunity to prove it.
Laveranues Coles. Coles wasn't a factor in this game and when he finally made his first (and only) catch of the day in the fourth quarter, he was blasted by cornerback Terrence McGee. He held on to the football, but LC looked like he was knocked out on the play. He laid motionless for some time, but finally left the field under his own power. He didn't return to the game. The Jets offense hasn't been fun to watch this season, but it could look downright ugly if they lose Coles for an extended period of time.
Kellen Clemens. This is what everyone has been clamoring for? I don't want to rip on Clemens because I don't know what kind of quarterback he is or is going to be, but he sure didn't look like a savior to me on Sunday. Yeah, he has a stronger arm than Pennington and made a couple of nice completions, but is that what it's all about now? Making some pretty throws? He didn't lead the Jets into the end zone. True, he was playing from behind against a defense that was gunning for him, but he still doesn't look ready to me. It's amazing what a good preseason, one quarter against the Ravens and a 1-7 start can do to the media and the fans. Clemens finished 5 of 12 for 67 yards and 2 INTs.
The Bills victory gives them their first series sweep against the Jets since 1997.
Eric Mangini didn't name the Jets starter for next week's home game against the Washington Redskins. I would be surprised if Mangini didn't go to the second-year pro from Oregon in that contest, but I have been wrong before.
After all, I thought this team was good enough to make the playoffs this season.
